House Passes Tobacco Regulation Legislation – Help it Pass in the Senate!

Please take a moment to call your Senators in support of legislation that would regulate the sale, marketing, and manufacturing of tobacco products.  ADHA is working as part of a national effort to pass this legislation—just a moment of your time will make an impact!

Call your Senators Today – Join in the Effort to Enact H.R. 1108/S. 625!

On July 30 the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 1108, legislation that would grant the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with the authority to regulate the marketing, manufacturing, and sale of tobacco products.  Tobacco products are currently among the least regulated products sold in the country and are exempt from regulations that apply to other consumer products.

ADHA has joined over 680 other organizations in the United States to advocate in favor of H.R. 1108 and its Senate companion, S. 625.  The overwhelming vote to pass H.R. 1108 was a great milestone in the effort, which has been spearheaded by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, but the fight is not over.  It is anticipated that S. 625 will face a tough battle to get through the Senate.

Senators need to hear from their constituents who support H.R. 1108/S. 625 if the legislation is to have a chance of making it through Congress this year.  Please take a moment to make a call or send an e-mail to your Senators and let them know that you support H.R. 1108/S. 625.  This is a great opportunity for the dental hygiene community to have its voice heard and join with hundreds of other organizations across the country on this important effort!

VICTORY over HB 1976!

Thank you so much to those who supported our association in defeating HB 1976 which would have allowed anyone to scale patients.  Congratulations!

HB 1976 was introduced by Rep. Michael L. Parson (133 R Bolivar) with a proposed effective date of August 28, 2008 that would have allowed dental assistants "to remove hard and soft deposits from teeth if done under the direct supervision of a licensed dentist."  That's right--no education required!!!  Many GSLDHA members, dentists, and other interested parties contacted their respective state legislator, both House and Senate members, to express their opposition.  Thank you for your continued support and for helping to uphold the high educational standards for dental hygiene!

The bill will always be a threat.

The time to fight it is now.

In times of need, your contacts should be courteous and professional. Your message might be something like this, in your own words:

“We are asking you to oppose (HB 1976) which would allow untrained individuals to perform dental hygiene procedures on the citizens of Missouri in an unsafe and dangerous manner. The legislation provides for no educational requirements for an untrained individual to perform dental hygiene procedures on Missouri residents. Dental hygienists are required to complete a 2-year educational program to provide these services. Thousands of dental hygienists and several hundred dentists throughout Missouri, oppose this legislation which could lead to an unsafe situation for Missouri residents seeking dental care. Please oppose (HB 1976) or any amendments to other bills which would reduce the educational requirements for individuals performing dental hygiene type services.

Thank you for your time and consideration
